Learning objectives:

1. Participants will increase their knowledge of grief theory, specifically how it presents when families experience pregnancy and infant loss

2. Participants will further develop their ability to provide care and support to grieving families

3. Participants will explore common biases and stigma that surround different types of pregnancy and infant loss

4. Participants will learn more about ways to reconcile their own grief needs with the demands of their clinical work with families

Presentation #3: Avoiding Legal Pitfalls with Fetal Health Surveillance

Speaker:

Dr. Sharon Dore

Description

This talk provides a practical outline of strategies for all caregivers (nurse, midwife, physician) to use when they are required to review, assess, plan and document care associated with intrapartum fetal health surveillance. Reviews of many clinical cases, associated with litigation, identified approaches to avoid varied interpretations of events and to demonstrate caregivers are meeting the standard of care. Approaches to effective communication in emergencies, with patients and families and with colleagues are discussed to ensure shared decision making, clear messaging and effective flow of care.
